General frame level segmentation for periodic broadcast of VBR videos

چکیده

Broadcast schemes scale well in transporting popular movies in video-on-demand (VOD) systems. A large number of broadcast schemes have been proposed, a small number of which deal with the variable bit rate (VBR) encoded videos used in practice. Among them, some take the frame sequence of a VBR video into consideration. Although a few of them can achieve optimal server bandwidth under certain conditions, they cannot ensure proper decoding and full display of each downloaded segment if there are frames, for example, B frames in MPEG, that require future reference frames for decoding. Here we present a novel lossless scheme, General Frame Level Segmentation (GFLS), to solves the above two problems. GFLS uses a segment-end-flag (SEF) sequence based on the frame interdependency to ensure continuous display of the whole video. Its important feature is that, both frame sequences in transmission order and in display order of a video have the same SEF sequence. We provide an efficient algorithm that uses the SEF sequence to implement GFLS. Keywords-video-on-demand; periodic broadcast; VBR videos; frame level segmentation.

Trace–Adaptive Fragmentation for Periodic Broadcast of VBR Video

Periodic broadcast schemes have been proposed as a scalable solution for the implementation of Video–on– Demand (VoD) systems. Efficient periodic broadcast schemes fragment each video into a number of segments assuming that the videos are encoded using Constant Bit Rate (CBR) coders. We focus instead on the more efficient and commonplace class of Variable Bit Rate (VBR) encoded videos. The clai...

Generalized data retrieval for pyramid-based periodic broadcasting of videos

A true video-on-demand system allows users to view any video program, at any time, and perform any VCR functions, but its per-user video delivery cost is too expensive to have commercial use. Periodic broadcasting (PB), which is a near video-on-demand technique, broadcasts videos repeatedly over broadcast channels. In this way, PB can service an unlimited number of clients simultaneously with a...

A Segmentation Rule for Designing Periodic Video Broadcast

We present a Client-Centric Broadcast (CCB) for efficient periodic broadcast of popular videos. At the core of this technique is a segmentation rule that allows us to find a series of segmentation approaches for a particular setting of client bandwidth. More specifically, given a client bandwidth of c times video playback rate, we can have c! = c× (c− 1)× · · ·× 1 different ways to partition a ...

A unified approach to content-based indexing and retrieval of digital videos from television archives

This work addresses the development of a unified approach to content-based indexing and retrieval of digital videos from television archives. The proposed approach has been designed to deal with arbitrary television genres, making it suitable for various applications. To achieve this goal, the main steps of a content-based video retrieval system are addressed in this work, namely: video segment...

Simple VBR Harmonic Broadcasting (SVHB)

One way to broadcast a popular video is to partition the video into segments, which are broadcasted on several streams periodically. The approach lets multiple users share streams; thus, the stress on the scarce bandwidth can be alleviated without sacrificing viewers’ waiting time. One representative approach is the Harmonic Broadcasting (HB) scheme, which can broadcast a video using multiple s...
